Bankruptcy Information

Utilities

Utility bills include electric, gas, telephone, and sewage bills. You may file on utilities if you are not current on them. The day your papers are filed in court is like reading your meter. Utility bills up to that date are discharged, if you file on them. After the bankruptcy, the utility company will require you to make a deposit to cover future losses. Normally it doesn't pay to file on utilities unless the amount is several hundred dollars or you are going to move. The utility company can't discriminate against you because you filed bankruptcy, but it can make you put up a deposit. If you move out of a building, have the utilities shut off.
